Brave Hearts, Mountain Roots:
An Affirmation Coloring Adventure
Brave Hearts, Mountain Roots: An Affirmation Coloring Adventure is a journey of hope and empowerment for girls rebuilding after the Helene.

Filled with affirmations and heartwarming illustrations of kindness, courage, and community, this book inspires resilience and celebrates the brave hearts of Appalachian girls everywhere.
  Ages 4-11
Coloring is more than just a creative activity—it’s a proven therapeutic tool, especially for children processing trauma. After the devastation of Hurricane Helene, many young girls have faced emotional and psychological challenges, such as anxiety, stress, and uncertainty.

Coloring provides a safe, calming outlet for these emotions, helping children rebuild a sense of security and control.
  • Stress Reduction: The repetitive and focused nature of coloring promotes relaxation, reducing stress and calming the mind.
  • Emotional Expression: For children who may struggle to articulate their feelings, coloring becomes a non-verbal way to express emotions and tell their stories.

Focus and Mindfulness:  Engaging in coloring helps ground children in the present moment, promoting mindfulness and easing feelings of overwhelm.
  • Building Confidence: Completing a coloring page gives children a sense of accomplishment, boosting self-esteem and reminding them of their ability to create beauty even after difficult experiences.
  • Encouraging Resilience: When combined with affirmations, coloring helps children internalize messages of strength, courage, and hope—empowering them to face the future with bravery.

Why I Created "Brave Hearts, Mountain Roots"

After witnessing the resilience and strength of the young girls affected by Hurricane Helene, I wanted to create something that could bring them comfort, hope, and a sense of empowerment.

While working on the Appalachian Doll Initiative, where we restore and deliver American Girl dolls to girls who lost so much, I realized how powerful play therapy could be in helping children heal.

This inspired me to create an additional resource that could complement play with the dolls—something therapeutic and creative.

"Brave Hearts, Mountain Roots" was born out of this desire to combine creativity with healing.

Through affirmations and heartwarming illustrations, this coloring book encourages courage, kindness, and community—values that are at the heart of Appalachia.

It’s my way of helping these girls see the beauty within themselves and their ability to overcome life’s storms, one colorful page at a time.

This coloring book also complements my new book, “The Miracle of the Mountain Quilt,” a heartwarming story that celebrates the resilience, love, and courage of Appalachian families.

Both projects were designed to provide not just hope, but also practical resources to help these communities rebuild after the storm.

Why I Wrote This Book

The Heart Behind the Story

I couldn’t stop thinking about the young girls who lost everything in the storm—their homes, their toys, their sense of safety. How do you bring hope to someone so small? As a mother of four myself, my heart broke imagining their pain, but I was also deeply moved by the stories of everyday people stepping up. Neighbors carrying supplies, rescuers braving the elements, and communities coming together—it was a beautiful reminder of the strength and kindness that define the Appalachian spirit.

This book grew out of a desire to honor that resilience and provide comfort during the hardest times. It’s a celebration of faith, family, and God’s faithfulness. My hope is that families everywhere will take this book out each Christmas, letting it inspire conversations about courage, kindness, and the miracles found in even the darkest moments. ----  Angela Tilsher, Author

An Appalachian Christmas to Remember

A story of faith, family, and the miracles found in the darkest hours

When a once-in-a-century hurricane tears through the Appalachian Mountains, it leaves behind more than broken homes—it leaves shattered hearts. But amidst the ruins, a patchwork of hope begins to form. In this heartwarming Appalachian Christmas tale, a family’s heirloom quilt, thought to be lost forever, finds its way back home.

Along the way, it weaves together stories of resilience, kindness, and the quiet strength that binds a community in its darkest hours.

With the rich traditions of an Appalachian Christmas and the enduring spirit of the mountains, The Miracle of the Mountain Quilt : An Appalachian Christmas Story is a celebration of faith, family, and the miracles that happen when neighbors come together.

This unforgettable story reminds us that bravery ain’t always loud; sometimes it’s quiet, like a stitch in a quilt or a neighbor’s helpin' hand.

Meet the Author

Angela Tilsher, wife to a retired Air Force veteran and mother of four, is a second-generation homeschooling mom with over 15 years of experience.

Based in Orlando, Florida— the vacation capital of the USA—Angela and her family embrace life as a team, thriving on creativity, service, and finding “magic” in everyday moments.

Known for their unique family traditions, the Tilshers were recently featured in a Disney mini-documentary that highlighted their mission of spreading kindness to Cast Members who create the magic at Disney World.

Angela believes wholeheartedly that “magic is a two-way street,” and her family’s lessons on gratitude and generosity have become a hallmark of their life together.
Rooted in their faith, Angela and her husband Mark strive to live out Ecclesiastes 9:10: “Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your heart.” For Angela, this means not only teaching her children the gospel but living it out daily through acts of service and love.

This story was inspired by the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene in 2024, a storm that tore through the Appalachian Mountains and left behind both destruction and remarkable stories of resilience.

Angela wrote this book to honor the unique efforts of neighbors, volunteers, and communities that brought hope in the face of overwhelming loss. In the wake of the storm, Angela’s family felt called to start an initiative to bring healing through play—repurposing American Girl dolls into beautiful Appalachian dolls with their own stories of bravery and strength.

These dolls, given to girls affected by the hurricane, became tools of comfort and joy during a time of great need. Proceeds from this book will go directly to continuing this heartfelt project, ensuring that young girls touched by the storm receives a reminder of hope, faith, and the strength of the Appalachian spirit.

Angela’s passion for storytelling, community, and faith shines through every page, creating a timeless story for families to treasure each Christmas season.

Whether it’s through a doll, a book, or a small act of kindness, together we can bring light to the darkest days.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
